Top Secret: Flatiron

I opened my mail yesterday to find these all new top secret prototype grips from the good folks at Morphix. It seems they have been tinkering with some new designs. The new grip code name : Flatiron seems to have many of the great properties of the original Humbolt grip. It does have a compressed quality to it and at first glance I was concerned if it was going to be comfortable. Once I laced it up I could tell it was going to be good fit.
One of the things they have achieved with the compact geometry is the feel of a smaller grip. It makes sense that you couldn't just shrink the Humbolt. Your thumb and fingers don't shrink so you want the grooves to fit your digits comfortably (which they do). So the new configuration feels more precise, maybe better to control a liner with, or a small mag. These are just prototypes so they seem to be the same material as the original Morphix grips, but I do have an inside word they are improving upon an already great base material.
I like them, I have a small to medium hand and I felt they would fit me better than the regular Humbolts, they may even take a bit more stress off the hand and they definitely offer some more control. I do think they may take a bit more time to adjust to rolling in the hand due to their oval shape, but they are form fitting. I am also glad to carry a product from a company that is moving in the forward direction, refining their products and taking some chances on new ideas. The inside word from Morphix is they will be available soon. Price TBA.

  • Se sonhado no universo do trabalho, com qualquer alusão ao seu trabalho, pode indicar êxito nos projetos; todos empreendimentos serão bem-sucedidos; recompensa de pessoas superiores;

Tattoo Artist Scott Campbell

For four years, famed tattoo artist Scott Campbell has been marking up high-profile clients in his Williamsburg shop Saved Tattoo. And on May 11th (that’s Mothers Day… write it down) he will be taking part in the Earnest Sewn Installation Series. Since 2004, jeans brand Earnest Sewn has tried to compliment their rustic style with classic Americana culture-gone-modern installation pieces. Showcasing artists, products, and ideas, it seems too perfect that Campbell’s bringing his iconic style to the Earnest Sewn Co.’s Meatpacking District flagship shop. As a “specialist in skulls, flames, naked ladies, portraits of deceased loved ones,” and all things iconic, Campbell will be designing a series of traditional “mom” tattoos for the day at $100 flat –- a nice discount from his regular $1,000/hour rate. Campbell’s shop opens at 9 a.m., and I’m seriously considering skipping the annual Mothers Day breakfast in bed, rolling up my sleeves and saying “I love you Mom,” like a mariner would. And while I’m there, maybe I’ll pick her up a limited edition Earnest Sewn T-shirt or wallet available for the day… just in case the tattoo doesn’t go over so well.

Hong Kong women shrug off tattoo taboo

Spurred-on by celebrity style or simply looking for a new way to stand out in a city of seven million, Hong Kong women are increasingly taking to tattoos -- an art form long considered taboo.

(AFP) -

Spurred-on by celebrity style or simply looking for a new way to stand out in a city of seven million, Hong Kong women are increasingly taking to tattoos - an art form long considered taboo.

Hidden demurely behind blouses and stockings during office hours, the walking, talking, body-art galleries are flaunted at the beach or in Hong Kong's trendy nightspots.

"Most women here who want tattoos are between 20 and 40 years old," says tattooist Joey Pang, who went a step further than most and opened her own parlour, the Tattoo Temple.

"At first they want smaller tattoos, more for beauty, more feminine designs. For their first one, most of the female customers want lower back tattoos, very popular.

"We educate them; they can have more choice, but they still don't want to show off."

Historically a firm favourite with male-dominated triad gangs, tattoos have been slow to gain popularity among women in the southern Chinese territory.

But with the ancient art now flashed on the pampered skin of a range of celebrities from movie star Angelina Jolie to party girl Paris Hilton, Pang says there has been a sharp rise in female customers eager to "get inked".

Tattooist Kenny Chin of Solo tattoo agrees that the old stigma attached to body-art is fading.

"Some men in Hong Kong do not accept their girlfriends having tattoos," he said. "But people are more open now - the tattoo is loosing the bad-guy status it once had."

For young women the decision to go under the gun now revolves more around the reaction of their parents than touchy gangsters - something Hong Kong student and apprentice tattoo artist Jeyers knows well.

"I had to hide my first tattoos because my parents are pretty traditional - and especially because they work in the medical field," she says, asking for her full identity to be withheld.

"They still don't know that in my spare time I work as an apprentice tattoo artist," she adds, recalling that when her mother found out about the first tattoos she initially wanted them removed by laser.

The 25-year-old, whose collection of body-art includes a hand-sized portrait of her surgeon father at work, located on her left shoulder, feels that mass media has played an important role in the rise of the female tattoo.

"Ten years ago tattoos were more underground; you didn't see a lot of tattoos on the streets, so I didn't know much about them."

But she says she saw more and more tattoos popping up in magazines and on the internet, and was attracted to them immediately.

"Before, there was not much choice, but it has evolved a lot more now," Jeyers says. "There are portraits, colour works, Japanese works, all kinds of styles, and I am so amazed by the work that you can put on people's skin."

ART TATTOO AS A LIFE STYLE

Art Tattoo has become a life style. This is according to tattoo artist, Freddy Mock, when speaking in the Art Tattoo Discussion and Photo Exhibition at Ours Café Semarang, Sunday (10/5) night. In this event, two Diponogoro University students, Titus Kurniawan and Gatot Caesario Tolando, held a tattoo photo exhibition.

Style Tattoo Artist

Tattoos like everything go through style changes. What are you seeing that is popular at the moment and where do you think the styles are headed in the future?
To tell you the truth I don’t really pay too much attention to syles/fads or what’s “so right now.” I believe every artist should have they’re own style, or at least be developing their body of work in a particular direction of originality which they can call their own. I think as far as tattooing goes there are styles that are tried and trued as exceptional tattoo imagery and have proved to hold the test of time in the skin. I think it is of crucial importance that every tattooer have some degree of knowledge and understanding of why these styles work in order for them to create good works.

Tattoo Artist Shrume

Also known as Garth Neale, Perth based tattoo artist Shrume has developed his unique style together with his cult following after 12 years of professional tattooing. Here is what he had to say about his style, influences and the politics of the Perth tattoo industry.

Tattoos Jim Jones At AOL Style Studio

Since Barth is said to have a year and a half waiting list, the Club Cards are an excellent way to give celebrities special treatment and to expand his own rep while marketing his multiple tattoo studios where you can get a Starlight Tattoo even if you can't afford Mario Barth himself.

In addition, Barth used the opportunity to get celebrities to sign a "custom-made leather embroidered chair that Barth will auction off for CureSearch, Childhood Cancer Foundation", thus working some positive energy into his marketing while giving him a future event to publicize.

There's also supposed to be coverage of Barth at AOL Music but I couldn't find it. I'm not how useful that would be for Mario Barth and I'm not really sure what all this does for AOL Music but Barth obviously knows how to work an event.

LIMA PERU - TATTOO CONVENTION LAST YEAR

Lima is a rad city. Peru is a real gem. It is full of unexpected surprises!! We were scheduled to do a seminar at the convention put on by Ramon. There are 2 conventions that happen there, one is put on by Ramon and the other by Miguel... We prefer Ramon's convention. It is bi annual and very professional.

We usually arrive at least a day prior to the event so we can iron out any kinks before we do the seminar, wether we need to buy tools, supplies, copy participation certificates or whatever it may be. On our way to do our shopping routine, we walked past a music store, saw some stuff we wanted to check out. While we were there, a guy came up to us, he said he recognized us from Thrasher Magazine from 1990!! He was an ex-sponsored skater named Juani Masias... we made friends and set up a time to surf in the morning. Morning came too soon, but we were excited to surf Peruvian waves!!! He picked us up and we were off...

Peruvian Surf Vehicle

We drove south down the coast passing old parts of the city which were once trendy and have lost their modern appeal. These places were full classic architecture, and very colorful. You would expect this country to be warm all year round but that is not the case! Remember, when you move further from the equator, in either direction, you start to have seasons. These seasons on opposite ends of the globe, are opposite from each other. For instance, when it's winter in Canada, it's summer in Argentina. Same as Peru. We were there in their fall... the water was cold, in this photo, you can see the greyness... look at Steve freezing his ass off...

Behind Steve is where we surfed. The beach was called Caballeros... it breaks into a cove, there are rights and lefts. This day, there were waves, it was 6-8 feet on the face. If you look to the left in the photo, around the middle of the picture, you will see some waves breaking WAY outside... this peak is called "Pico Alto". This is a HUGE wave.. it breaks way out and you have to be towed into it in order to get on. You wouldn't have the strength to paddle onto it on your own. In this photo, we're facing the ocean, what do you think is behind us when you're looking toward the ocean? Topical Greenery? Palms? NOPE!!!

Sand dunes and more sand dunes. Those are all little ghetto houses on the side of the dune. As desolate as it looks, it has a real cool personality. The waves were clean and good... strong and relatively uncrowded. It was a good time. Our friend Juani, shaped one of the boards we took out. Totally functional but visually unconventional. We came in and got some food at the restaurant/surf shop there before we headed back to the city.

Art and Juani eating chips and talking shit.

The way back was interesting too!! We were re routed to different roads due to a potential riot about to happen. There were cops in riot gear, shields and helmets... people on the other side of the street ready to go. Not sure what it was about, but after many travels in South America, we could guess that it may have something to do with the government f*cking their people over in some way.

How many of you readers have eaten ceviche? It's a raw fish prepared in lime juice. The lime juice "cooks" the fish. Peru is well known for that dish, as well as a juice made out of corn! This was on the menu for us that night. The traditional Peruvian foods we ate were great. There was one in particular which was NOT so hot... anticuchos... cow heart. Not so good.

The tattoo convention was great, it was packed. In our seminar, we met several artists from different countries, the most standout ones were the Naranjo Brothers. They are from Ecuador, Quito to be exact. The shop they own is called House of Style. They are unreal artists... both of them. Mauro is the older brother, he is a machine builder as well. His creations are original and very well tuned. It shows in the tattoos he does... we met other brothers there who bought machines from us. In the photo below, they teamed up on a back piece. They finished this in 5 hours. The client sat like a champion!

All that red is NOT blood!!!

The convention was a success for us and even if it wasn't monetarily profitable, just being there is worth every penny you spent. The culture is rad, the people are cool, the scenery is unbelievable, the waves were quality, the food delicious... can't wait to go again!
